G35 Air Intake
Basic Air Induction System Mechanics:
All cold air intakes operate on the principle of increasing the amount of oxygen available for combustion with fuel. Because cooler air has a higher density (greater mass per unit volume), cold air intakes generally work by introducing cooler air from outside the hot engine bay. However, the term "cold air intake" is often used to describe other methods of increasing oxygen to an engine, which may even increase the temperature of the air coming into an engine.
Some strategies used in designing cold air intakes are:
- increasing the diameter of the air intake, this allows increased airflow.
- smoothing the interior of the intake to reduce air flow resistance.
- providing a more direct route to the air intake.
- tuning the length of the intake to provide maximum airflow at certain engine speeds (RPM).
- using a more efficient, less restricting air filter.
What They Mean by Ram-Air Intake:
A ram-air intake is any intake design which uses the dynamic air pressure created by vehicle motion to increase the static air pressure inside of the intake manifold on an engine, thus allowing a greater mass flow through the engine and hence increasing engine power.
The ram air inductions system works by reducing the intake air velocity by increasing the cross sectional area of the intake ducting. When gas velocity goes down the dynamic pressure is reduced while the static pressure is increased. The increased static pressure in the plenum chamber has a positive effect on engine power, both because of the pressure itself and the increased air density this higher pressure gives.
